20 Years After the Worst Terrorist Attack in U.S. History

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the nation remembers the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, hijackers flew two planes into the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City, one plane into the Pentagon just outside of Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The Attacks

The attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization led by Osama bin Laden. The hijackers, 19 in total, were all from Saudi Arabia.

The collapse of the World Trade Center towers and the damage to the Pentagon caused billions of dollars in damage and disrupted air travel and business in the United States for weeks.

The Aftermath

The September 11 attacks had a profound impact on the United States and the world. The attacks led to the launch of the War on Terror, which has included military action in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries.

The attacks also led to the passage of the Patriot Act, which expanded the government's surveillance powers. Additionally, the attacks had a significant impact on the American psyche, leading to a heightened sense of fear and insecurity.

Remembering the Victims

Today, we remember the victims of the September 11 attacks. We also honor the first responders who risked their lives to save others.

We must never forget the lessons of September 11. We must remain vigilant against terrorism and we must continue to work to build a more just and peaceful world.
