Haaland Opens the Scoring, Mahrez Seals the Win with Late Penalty
Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of usurping Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table were dealt a significant blow on Sunday afternoon as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to the reigning champions.
Erling Haaland, who had failed to score in his previous two appearances for City, ended his drought in the 53rd minute, tapping home from close range after being set up by Kevin De Bruyne. Riyad Mahrez then sealed the win for City with a penalty in the 90th minute, after De Bruyne had been fouled in the area.
The victory sees City move back to the top of the table, one point ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand. Tottenham remain third, five points behind City.
City were the better side throughout the match, and they could have won by a more comfortable margin had they been more clinical in front of goal. Haaland had a number of other chances to score, but he was unable to find the net again.
Tottenham, on the other hand, were poor. They created very few chances, and they were never really in the game. They will need to improve significantly if they are to challenge for the title this season.
